If you live in Southwestern Ontario or the GTA, you already know that heading down the QEW to Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of the best weekend getaways the province has to offer. It feels like stepping into a different era, where the pace slows down, the colours of the heritage buildings pop against the lake backdrop, and the local flavours take centre stage.
If you're planning a visit, here is a local's guide on how to make the most of your time in Ontario's wine country.
1. Savour the World-Class Wineries
You can't talk about NOTL without talking about the wine. The region’s unique microclimate makes it one of the best grape-growing areas in Canada, particularly famous for its sweet, rich Icewine.
Peller Estates: Perfect for a high-end dining experience or their famous 10Below Icewine Lounge.
Two Sisters Vineyards: If you love bold reds and incredible Italian-inspired food set against a stunning vineyard backdrop, this is a must-visit.
Trius Winery: Great for an Instagram-worthy afternoon and fantastic sparkling wines.
2. Stroll Down Queen Street
The heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake is Queen Street. Lined with lush flower baskets, boutique shops, and historic storefronts, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon walking. Stop by the iconic Prince of Wales Hotel for traditional afternoon tea, grab an ice cream at Cows, or browse the local artisan shops. The architecture here has been meticulously preserved, giving the entire street a movie-set quality.
3. Take in the History and Culture
NOTL isn't just about food and drink; it was the first capital of Upper Canada and played a massive role in the War of 1812.
Fort George National Historic Site: Take a tour of the military post that defended Upper Canada. The live musket demonstrations and historic interpreters bring the 19th century to life.
The Shaw Festival: If you love the arts, catching a world-class theatre production at the Shaw Festival is an absolute must. It draws incredible talent and offers a mix of classic and contemporary plays throughout the season.
4. Rent a Bike and Hit the Trails
One of the best ways to see the region is on two wheels. You can rent a bicycle near the centre of town and ride the scenic Niagara River Recreation Trail. It’s a flat, beautiful path that winds past heritage homes, fruit stands, and vineyards, allowing you to take in the fresh lake air at your own pace.
Whether you're visiting for a romantic weekend, a girls' getaway, or a relaxing day trip, the charm of this town never disappoints.
If you're from Niagara-On-The-Lake and need a home elevator, let us know. We'd love to visit again!
